WOWAN DULULU LANDCARE GROUP
Home Page

The Wowan/Dululu area is located 70 km southwest of Rockhampton in Central Queensland and close to the historic gold fields of Mount Morgan.

The Wowan/Dululu Landcare Group was formed in 1990 and has undertaken many community projects throughout the last fifteen years.

The largest of these is the Dee River Project.
The Dee River is the most polluted river in Queensland and this group has worked for eight years to secure funding to start a clean up of the river bed and neutralisation of the water from the Mine Pit.

The group is currently also actively encouraging the clean up of Harrisia Cactus and have secured some funding through the Fitzroy Basin Association ( National Action Plan for Salinity for Water Quality) but have also contributed most of the funding from their own group funds.  To date, over 40 properties have taken part in the try before you buy' chemical evaluation scheme.

The Wowan Dululu farming economy is based on irrigated and dryland agriculture on the alluvial flats, combined with cattle grazing on the floodplain and upper catchments, of Alma Creek and the Dee and Don Rivers.
Consequently there are a variety of interests to be covered at field days and by project funding.
Recent projects in the area have included riparian fencing and watering point establishment, which have been complemented by field days on pasture composition and competition. This was also an opportunity to discuss feed supplementing and Near infra-red dung sampling techniques.

A group in the area have also been involved in controlled traffic farming for many years on a cooperative basis and this has led to a community approach to the establishment of a community owned base station and repeater to service an area of approximately 120km2. The CTF project will initially involve 8 properties, with an option for more to use the base station as they purchase or hire equipment.

The Wowan Dululu Landcare Group also owns equipment which is available for use by members of the community. A listing of group owned equipment is included on the contact page.

The Wowan Dululu Landcare Group have active links with both the Fitzroy Basin Association and the Dawson Catchment Coordinating Association, and this regional cooperation has led to the success of it's varied projects.
